CAROL BARSHA: A PIECE OF MAGIC

"The painting is not on a surface but on a plane which is imagined…It is an illusion, a piece of magic, so that what you see is not what you see." - Philip Guston

Paradise, 2023, collaged watercolor, gouache, ink and charcoal pencil on Arches Aquarelle HP, sheet size: 37 x 42 inches

gallery neptune & brown welcomes back artist Carol Barsha with her second solo exhibition, introducing a captivating series of multi-media works that delve into the intricate complexities of the artist’s imagination. Inspired by her surroundings, personal experiences and the teachings of her mentor, Philip Guston, Barsha exercises her observations of nature and classical painting to produce her larger-than-life creations.

In addition to her fascination with florae and landscapes, in this exhibition, Barsha experiments by combining new mediums and by expanding her color palette to include exuberant neons.

Her compositions draw the viewer into the microcosm of Barsha’s surreal dreamscape in which “what you see is not what you see.” In paintings such as Paradise, 2023, Barsha’s colossal flowers occupy the forefront of the picture plane. Faced with the monumental blossoms, one is immersed within the mystical world of Barsha’s mind’s eye.

According to Barsha, her paintings are not records of observed phenomena, but awe-inspiring visual journals “representing highly personal voyages of loss and joy.” Beyond literal representations, these creations emerge as manifestations of the subconscious, guiding us through a magical and colorful journey.

Barsha studied painting and drawing at Boston University. She has exhibited at the Art Institute of Boston and the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, and her art can be found in various permanent collections including the Federal Reserve in Washington, DC, and the Women’s Art Collection at Cambridge University.
