TAMING ABSTRACTION

A Group Exhibition

On view: April 27th- June 7th 2024

Since the early 20th century, abstract artists have pushed the boundaries of artistic convention, turning away from figurative subjects and focusing on non-objective use of pattern, color, and form. Acknowledging the challenge of taming abstraction, gallery neptune & brown presents an exciting abstraction exhibition of new work curated within the matrix of oil on canvas, printmaking, and works on paper.

This exhibition presents a diverse group of blue-chip and
mid-career artists, highlighting a variety of styles and mediums unified by abstraction. Each artist explores unique themes, ranging from order, precision, and infinity to expressive movement, gestural marks, and bold colors:

James Siena delves into themes of order and infinity through his intricate, rule-based compositions, while Erick Johnson employs irregular polygons and bold colors to articulate his interpretation of order. Similarly, Paul Inglis demonstrates precision in his monoprint woodblocks, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship.

Linework plays a monumental part in several Abstract artists including Brice Marden’s work which utilizes rhythmic patterns of intertwining lines. Similarly, David Row and Richard Serra use lyrical lines to convey a sense of dynamic energy in their editions.  While Christiane Baumgartner etches clusters of lines signifying speed and velocity.

Drawing serves as the medium for both David X Levine and Caleb Nussear. Levine utilizes a special method, allowing his colored pencil drawing to ‘bloom’ before buffing, while Nussear employs a unique technique of folding paper to create meticulous drawings that push the boundaries of traditional methods.

Bold colors and shapes take focus in both Nick Lamia's and Bridget Riley’s work. Lamia’s oil paintings evoke the intertwining of society and nature, while Riley's work is defined by her exploration of optical phenomena and visual effects.  Helen Frankenthaler’s work is marked by the use of bold colors and expressive gesture conjuring emotions in her work. Barbara Takenaga employs dense repetitive forms to create vibrant cosmic creation.

Taming Abstraction promises to delight a wide audience with its diverse exploration of abstraction across various mediums and themes. For further information please contact Chris Neptune: Chris@neptunefineart.com
