Foon Sham:
Exuberant Journey
On view April 2 through May 1, 2016
gallery neptune & brown is pleased to announce an exhibition of works by noted international artist Foon Sham. Born in Macao, China, and schooled in the USA, Sham’s decades-long career has spanned the globe and reflects a journey still unfolding. This exhibition will showcase both sculpture and works on paper and will be on view from April 2nd until May 1st, 2016.
Sham’s sculptures and works on paper are conceived by combining individual and contrasting elements to create cohesive works that convey a sense of unity. For over thirty years Sham has passionately and meticulously carved, sculpted, layered, stained, glued and stacked hundreds, sometimes thousands of wood blocks to create unique, beautiful and thought-provoking sculpture. Sham states that he seeks to explore and “create forms that reference environments and resonate with the human spirit.” His works on paper––a mix of pastels, acrylic, and crayon––are a vibrant extension of his sculptural work. These drawings offer audiences a fresh perspective on the creative vision in which Foon approaches each new three dimensional work.
Foon Sham received a BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts, and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. He is a professor of Art at the University of Maryland and has been awarded many fellowships, grants and artist’s residencies throughout the world––including programs in France, Norway, Sweden, Chile, Scotland, Hungary, and Australia. Sham has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally and is featured in dozens of public and private collections worldwide.
