LIMITLESS ARE LEAVES

gallery neptune & brown is pleased to present Jowita Wyszomirska’s fourth solo exhibition LIMITLESS ARE LEAVES. Continuing her work as an artist and environmental activist, this exhibition is a collaboration with nature. Driven by curiosity about remaining Old-growth forests in the United States, Jowita visited National and State forests in the mid-Atlantic region. She absorbed the profound impact the trees have on us and the impact humans have on these rare hardwood trees.

In their majesty, Old-growth forests provide incredible benefits to both their immediate ecosystems as well as the greater environment. Old-growth forests act as carbon reservoirs, capturing and storing carbon dioxide, removing it from the Earth’s atmosphere. Within their environment, the forest is a realm intricately woven together by threads of intersections, with the Old-growth trees providing nutrients and homes for the organisms living within its influence. Wyszomirska’s artistic process is layered and involved. She begins her journey on foot, exploring and carefully foraging leaves and flora under the lofty canopies of the tulip poplar, sycamore, hemlock, and red spruce trees. In working with nature, she steams flora onto paper allowing the naturally occurring green chlorophyll pigment to act as ink that unveils the hidden hues and textures.

The resulting images are used as the foundation for her intricate mixed-media drawings, which reference elements from historical maps, weather data, and tree network graphs. A visual nexus between her love of nature and ecological concerns, Jowita’s art captures the magnificence and vulnerability of our planet. Through her artistic layering and observation of Old-growth forests, Jowita reminds us of the connections that exist between all living things.

Jowita Wyszomirska was recently a finalist for the Baker Prize at The Baltimore Museum of Art in 2023. She has held residency fellowships at the Jentel Foundation, Wyoming; Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, Nebraska; and the International School of Painting, Drawing and Sculpture, Italy.
