gallery neptune & brown is pleased to introduce New England artist Paul Inglis to Washington D.C. Concurrently on view will be editions by New York artist Joel Shapiro. Both Inglis and Shapiro emphasize a spatial relationship with the figure. Modernist lines and folk-art sensibilities can be seen in each artist’s geometric forms.

The small scale of Inglis’s work invites the viewer to have an intimate conversation with the objects. For Inglis, his work reflects observations in his surroundings. In abstracting from these memories, Inglis makes connections to emotions associated with the built environment. His painted wood sculptures playfully represent his systems of construction and are topped with vibrant colors.

Inglis’s sculptures, which he calls critters, are not only influenced by his experience of urban spaces but also the objects in his studio. Antique toys and collectibles inform the scale and nostalgic color palette. Through the manipulation of his woodblocks and the use of chine collé, Inglis creates monoprints with interlocking patterns and depths of color. Inglis permits the viewer into his world, allowing opportunities for varied interpretation. The work balances the personal without being overly sentimental.

In contrast to Inglis’s compact critters and monoprints, Joel Shapiro is known for imposing, soaring sculptures, typically made from wood or bronze. Shapiro has been making art for fifty years. He creates his seemingly simple forms out of multicolored painted blocks and geometric planes. A number of his pieces suggest human figures in motion, though his minimalist compositions leave much to the imagination. In his editions, Shapiro uses the same sculptural language to focus on the spatial relationships at the center of his artistic practice.

Shapiro has exhibited widely and his large-scale sculptures can be found in DC and Maryland at the Kennedy Center, The Holocaust Museum, The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, and The Baltimore Museum of Art.
